Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry treatment that involves bonding a wafer-thin, tooth-colored material, usually made of resin or porcelain, to the front surface of teeth to enhance their appearance. Dr. di Bari uses porcelain veneers, which more closely reflect the characteristics of natural teeth and are more resistant to staining than resin veneers. He enjoys helping his patients get a smile makeover using veneers since he can make a big impact with minimal tooth reduction.

What kinds of issues can veneers fix?

Veneers provide a permanent and relatively quick way to fix a number of teeth imperfections, including:

  • Gapped teeth
  • Worn down enamel
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Stained or discolored teeth
  • Misaligned, uneven or misshapen teeth

How long will it take to get veneers?

Generally you will need to make two to three appointments to get veneers. There are four key steps in the process.

The treatment plan

During your first appointment, Dr. di Bari will examine your teeth and may take X-rays to determine if you are a good candidate for veneers. If everything looks good, you’ll make your next appointment to get started.

Tooth preparation

Since the veneer will be placed on the surface of your tooth, Dr. di Bari shaves off a very thin layer of your tooth’s enamel to make room for the veneer. Some patients may prefer to be given a local anesthetic during this step, but you and Dr. di Bari can decide what’s best for your pain threshold.

Create the veneer

Dr. di Bari makes an impression of your tooth and sends it to a laboratory, which will create your veneer. In some cases, Dr. di Bari places a temporary veneer on your tooth while the permanent one is being made.

Cement and cure

When your new veneer comes back, Dr. di Bari cleans, polishes and etches your tooth to create a strong bonding surface. He then glues the veneer to your tooth’s surface and cures the cement with a special light. Now you’ll be sporting that Hollywood smile you always wanted.
